Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali today questioned the motive of lawyers at the Suhakam inquiry who linked the Malay right wing movement and televangelist Zakir Naik to the disappearance of Pastor Raymond Koh.
“What is the motive and intentions of the lawyers in linking Perkasa to Koh?,” Ibrahim asked during a press conference at the NGO’s office this afternoon.
“The policeman’s statement also created a negative perception on Perkasa,” he added, referring to Assistant Superintendent Supari Muhammad who was a witness at the inquiry.
Ibrahim also called for Bukit Aman to investigate the matter.
“I checked with Bukit Aman and they claimed it was misquoted but the media has video recording. Bukit Aman should inquire its personnel as the statement gives a bad impression on us,” he said.
During his testimony, Supari agreed with lawyers that Perkasa and controversial preacher Zakir may be relevant to the disappearance of Koh who was abducted on Feb 10, when he was questioned by lawyers at the Suhakam public inquiry.
Supari is the investigating officer in this case and he revealed this at inquiry on Nov 13.
The inquiry is held to determine if the disappearance of Koh and three others – Pastor Joshua Hilmy, his wife – Ruth, and social activist Amri Che Mat – are cases of enforced disappearance.
Ibrahim said that he did not see the link in the disappearance of Koh with Perkasa and Zakir as he himself had called on the police to investigate Koh’s disappearance.
He also pointed out that Perkasa’s stance in defending Zakir too was not connected to the case since the government’s initial silence led Perkasa to defend Zakir on humanitarian grounds.
“I consider this a big joke but it is also bad publicity for Perkasa,” he added.
Ibrahim also said that his movement would only opt to using legal suit as a last resort when asked whether Perkasa would consider suing those who claimed Perkasa was an extremist organisation.
Perkasa’s legal counsel Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz meanwhile said he issued a legal notice to Suhakam chairman Razali Ismail requesting for four materials.
“We are requesting for the seventh witness ASP Supari Muhammad’s complete statement transcript, dates of the upcoming hearing of the public inquiry, the witness list, terms of reference of the inquiry panel,” he said.
“We have also applied to be observers on behalf of Perkasa and Zakir,” he added.
