In light with the many administrative scandals over Trump presidency, one cannot rule out the possibility of impeachment of the sitting US president. Beginning with the sacking of the country Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director James Comey last week while the bureau are doing their investigation over the allegation of Russian interference during last year US presidential election, the exposure by the Washington Post over the issue concerning the revelation of highly classified information by President Trump to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador in the US during their visit to the US president in the White House and latest the discovery of memo which was handed to the former FBI director stating the possible president Trump interference with the FBI probe. Everybody have their own view over the personality and character of the US president, Donald J. Trump.
For some peoples, he been seen as strong, pragmatic, reliable and even honest as compare to the old establishment and political elite. But to others, he been interpreted as someone who is very unpredictable. If he turns out to be a good president, then American would be very much grateful, but if he turns out to be bad one, then American might have no option except to take step to uphold their country constitution.
The US Constitution clearly provide for the impeachment process of their own leader. Article II of the United States Constitution states in Section 4 that “The President, Vice President, and all civil Officers of the United States shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors”.
High crimes and misdemeanors here covers many allegations of misconduct peculiar to an officials, such as perjury of oath, abuse of authority, bribery, intimidation, misuse of assets, failure to supervise, dereliction of duty, conduct unbecoming, and refusal to obey a lawful order, and others.
The Impeachment in the US is an enumerated power of the legislature that allows formal charges to be brought against a civil officer of government even against their own president for crimes alleged to have been committed by them. In the past, impeachment proceedings have been initiated against several of the country own presidents like Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton.
Though both of them have been successfully impeached by the House of Representative and later acquitted by the House of Senate, still the country constitution provides room for impeachment process if the country civil official or their own leader refuse to follows rules of law and found to have abused their power.
The impeachment power given through the country constitution give the country leader and all their public official a strong and clear reminder that their power are not absolute, and that they cannot do things according to their wishes and undermine the country own rules of law and interest of the peoples and most important whatever they do will always be subjected to be scrutinized by others.
