On September 12, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington.
The visit is aimed at strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
Let us take a look at how this visit can benefit the rakyat.
The visit will boost Najib’s image, global stature and position
The visit will no doubt boost Datuk Seri Najib’s image as a world class leader always concerned with the welfare of the rakyat.
Elina Noor, of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia, said Datuk Seri Najib’s visit to the White House would underline Najib’s stature as a respected leader and statesman.
Speaking to the New York Times.com, Elina said Datuk Seri Najib is warmly welcomed in the United States at the highest level, simultaneously quashing controversial allegations against him.
When Datuk Seri Najib’s status is high, it would be a good image for Malaysia as investors would have the confidence in the Prime Minister and the country.
In the end, the benefits will trickle down to the rakyat.
The visit can boost trade between the US and Malaysia
The visit can definitely boost trade between the US and Malaysia.
In a report by the Star on July 18, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said Malaysia is committed towards strengthening and deepening bilateral trade relations with the United States following changes in the Trump administration.
Mustapa said new approaches would be explored, including the option of reactivating the Trade and Investment Facilitation Agreement, to improve trade between both countries.
The US is Malaysia’s third largest trading partner, as well as the country’s largest investor in the electrical and electronic sector.
The US is the world’s largest economy and it would be better for Malaysia to become close friends with the superpower for the benefit of the rakyat.
When the US invests, new factories can be set up and new jobs are created and this will be good for the rakyat.
The visit can help counter the I.S. threat
The visit between the two countries is mutually beneficial as both countries can share information and intelligence on the threat of the I.S.
When there is a terrorist threat in Malaysia or in the US, the security forces of both countries can help each other.
The IS must be defeated as they kill innocent people including woman and children.
If the IS issue is not addressed, the terrorists will create fear among investors.
And when investors do not come and invest in Malaysia, there will be no economic growth.
Without economic growth, our country will not prosper and the rakyat will suffer.
Najib will not be arrested
The invitation represents a significant boost to Datuk Seri Najib and is likely to put to rest rumors in Malaysia that he would be arrested the next time he stepped on American soil.
The invitation by President Trump shows that he has faith in Datuk Seri Najib and that it has got nothing to do with all the allegations made against Datuk Seri Najib.
The White House said the visit was intended to “strengthen and broaden our bilateral relationship and expand regional cooperation with one of America’s closest partners in Southeast Asia.
So all the doomsayers are wrong when they say Datuk Seri Najib will be arrested the next time he goes to the United States.
The Trans Pacific Partnership can be revived?
Datuk Seri Najib’s visit may also see the possibility of the Trans Pacific Partnership or TPP revived?
Or at least, a new trade agreement altogether?
The US is aware on the rise of China in the South East Asia region and would not want to be missed out.
Malaysia was also instrumental in the setting up of the TPP.
Perhaps now, the US would want a new version of the TPP and Trump would need Datuk Seri Najib’s partnership to set up the new trade agreement.
A trade agreement will definitely benefit the rakyat providing them jobs and economic wealth.
Trump needs an important partner in South East Asia
Trump is aware on the rising of China in the South East Asia region and would want to check and balance China from doing whatever it wants.
To do that, Trump would need an ally and that ally is Datuk Seri Najib.
President Trump has faith in Datuk Najib who is expected to win the next general elections and he will become an important partner to the United States in the region.
