Dr Mahathir Mohamd said he was not interested to stand in Gombak seat, the parliamentary seat of Mohamed Azmin Ali, following the Selangor menteri besar’s offer to allow him to contest there at the next polls.
Dr Mahathir, Pakatan Harapan’s chairman and prime ministerial candidate, said he still preferred Langkawi, Kubang Pasu and Putrajaya.
“I choose Langkawi, Kubang Pasu and Putrajaya. I haven’t thought about Gombak yet. My thanks to Azmin but I have made my decision between these three seats,” he told reporters after attending the official launch of PPBM’s Setiawangsa division last night.
Azmin had said he was ready to vacate Gombak, which he won in the last two general elections, to ensure Mahathir has a winning chance at the next polls.
This comes after outspoken former minister Zaid Ibrahim questioned the opposition’s commitment to ensure Dr Mahathir’s election victory, saying the former prime minister should be standing in a “safe seat”.
“I’m ready to make way for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Gombak if PKR agrees,” Azmin, the PKR deputy president, said on Twitter recently.-FMT
