Police have arrested four men in connection with the fireworks explosion during a Thaipusam chariot procession here which left more than 30 devotees and a policeman injured yesterday evening.
Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Saifi Abdul Hamid said the men, aged between 25 and 34 were detained at the scene in Jalan Sekerat here shortly after the 8.30pm incident.
He said the forensics team had carried out investigations at the site and police have ruled out any element of sabotage in the explosion.
“The police forensics team have found traces of fireworks explosives at the site.
“We have arrested four men at the scene and based on initial investigations, there is no element of sabotage or mischief in the incident as the men were celebrating Thaipusam while waiting for the chariot procession,” he said in a statement.
Saifi said four out of the 26 devotees, including a five-year-old child who were injured in the blast are warded at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for further treatment.-NST
